New Museum Director
Posted January 09, 2012
Sandra Palomar-Quan New Met Museum Director
The Metropolitan Museum of Manila opens the year with its newly appointed director, Sandra Palomar–Quan. A multi-media artist, she lived and worked in Paris from 1992 till 2008 after completing a BFA in painting from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (cum laudé) particularly under professors Vinluan, Defeo, and Chabet. Afterwhich she graduated summa cum laudé from the Ecole Nationale Supérièure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Paris, winning the prize of its foundation in multi-media work in 1996. In France she was mentored by French artists Boltanski, Gette, Messager and performance artist Abramovic.
Cultural mediation became an important component of her work after years of assisting artists and working closely with diplomatic units. She spearheaded the first official participation of the Filipino community in the annual Fete de la Musiquein Paris in 2006. In 2008 she co-founded a non-profit art association (Sanlikha, Maison des Artistes Philippins a Paris) that continues to offer support and guidance to Filipino artists residing in France.
Palomar endeavors to breach the gap between subject and experience in art, willingly participating in its dissemination through skills training and managerial projects. In 2010 she established a company in her hometown of Antipolo City for continued training of fine artists and art assistants. She has organized exhibitions and contemporary art production projects for designers and visual artists both local and foreign. Her most recent mission has been the set-up of a production unit for high-end hand printed textiles for export. She is married to French national Nicolas Quan and has a 5-year old daughter, Meiji.
